fountain lakes
Melbourne/Naarm duo Fountain Lakes are Jac Tonks and Emma Heeney. This August they release their debut EP, Junkyard of Lost Hearts. Bringing together previous singles Castaway and Cry Wolf, alongside two new tracks; Junkyard of Lost Hearts and Medicated Love, the four-song collection moves between indie folk, dream pop and country, with intertwined vocals, shimmering guitars and spacious arrangements that are laid back, sweet and full of regret.
Written during a songwriting retreat in a converted church in country Victoria and recorded with Roger Bergodaz at Union Street Studios, the EP features long-time collaborators Nick O'Mara (Raised by Eagles/Amarillo), Mark Monnone (Monnone Alone, ex-The Lucksmiths) and Gus Franklin (Smallgoods, Monnone Alone).
The title track, Junkyard of Lost Hearts, is a bittersweet ballad where sparkling lap steel and layered harmonies drift through heartbreak, while Medicated Love closes the record with a slow-burning lament inspired by the romance and melancholy of 1960s girl groups.
Over the past year, Fountain Lakes have quietly built a loyal following. Their debut single Dreams premiered on ABC TV's Rage, received strong support from PBS FM and 3RRR, and launched with a sold-out show at The Wesley Anne. They have since toured regional Victoria, supported Irish band DUG, single Castaway found support across ABC and community radio, while most recent single Cry Wolf secured a video premiere on the AU Review, charted across community radio metro and indie charts, and landed international playlist placement.
“Just when you think that all of the great chorus one-liners are taken, Fountain Lakes find a corker with, ‘I don’t even cheat in dreams’. It is not wasted on them with their transcendent harmonies and deft song structure. They are gorgeously clever in every way!” Angie Hart (Frente)
“Harmonies like honey, gentle strumming of angels, utterly mesmeric!” ****½ Kath Deveney, ABC Radio
"..pairing shimmering melodies with a sense of calm momentum that feels both deeply felt and effortlessly light.” - Happy Mag
